ideazapToday on IdeaZap we interviewed Mike Kroger, 49 year old, single parent living in Pretoria but born in Durban and studied in Cape Town. This IT Consultant started PLAK. Yes Plak, in Afrikaans meaning “Stick”.

What is Plak?
Plak is 100% free of charge. It is a Google Maps Web application for South Africans to locate places of interest (Hopefully it’ll also become a useful resource for tourists planing trips to South Africa). It also allows those who are logged in, to place “Plaks” on the map of South Africa.

Mike launched his project knowing that Google Maps did not contain very comprehensive information for South Africa. He also mentioned a very real possibility of Plak tying into a local GIS services for Geocoding.

Long Term Goals?
To become a useful resource for South Africans and tourists to locate and view location based information. At the moment there are about 600 place markers in the database. Mike’s feeling is that the application will start getting really useful when there are about 4000 place markers in the database. Eventually he hopes to have between 20 000 and 40 000 place markers in the database.

Thus far only 23 subscribers…we wish Mike all the best on his new project!
