Sturvs, Social bookmarking for Nigeria with a twist
Sturvs, Nigerias answer to digg, is a social bookmarking web site with a bit of a twist. Sturv is the colloquial word for ’stuff’ in Nigeria and thanks to Loy at startupsnigeria for the tip. You can view sturvs classified under ‘Hot’ and ‘Latest’. The home page also has two small boxes on the main landing page, one of them being ‘latest sturvs’. I like this idea, since some people never go to the latest page and it gives new posts a fighting chance to be noticed.
All submissions are further classified under different categories for example technology, sport or politics with RSS feeds available for each of these, a feature strangely lacking from South African web 2.0 counterparts muti & laak.it.
Update: According to this post RSS feeds do exist for muti, but there are no links to this on the webpage.
In addition to the these categories, music and movies have special pages and once submitted they can be played from the sites home page. The videos are embedded from YouTube while music is upload and added to the playlist once they receive enough votes, at the last count there were 145 submissions. I like this feature as it keeps the user on the site but a similar thing is done when clicking on a link with a pop-up window. Pop-up windows are annoying and you cant click multiple links you are forced to right click and open in new browser/tab.
The site also seems to record how many times each item was viewed by each user as well as the date and time, i am uncertain if this affects promotion to the front page or not but presumably it will be used in the future.

Barring the Popup window it’s a great site and judging from the music and video features i think they have their sights set on doing more then just social bookmarking.

All the pages containing links on muti.co.za should have an RSS feed – just add output=rss as a parameter in the URL and let us know if you have any problems.
