SpringLeap, Crowd Sourcing T-Shirt Design

2008 May 5
by Ismail Dhorat

SpringLeap, a South African based internet startup allows anyone to submit designs for a T-Shirt. Each month a winner is selected based on voting and they receive a cash prize of R7000(+-$1000). The winning designer receives R2 commission and runners up receive R1 commission for every sale. The T-Shirts are distributed locally at selected stores and are fully produced with material from South Africa.

Proudly Mzansi, Springleap aims to uplift and empower South Africans from the ground up. “We offer artists, designers and people with something to say the opportunity to be publicly showcased. Call us a gallery without walls if you like, but what better way to get known than to have your designs emblazoned on a t-shirt?” says Eran Eyal.

The website is currently in beta, but you can already submit and vote and there are plans to add some social networking features as well.

They’re not an ‘internet startup’. They’re a clothing manufacturer and a niche one at that.

Rupert, thanks for the comment, i see how the post may be misunderstood. The review was purely on the website and not the manufacturer or sale. Hope that clears it up.

Rupert – we think of ourselves as a technology play. Give us a couple months and you’ll see why I say that. We’re definately not classifying ourselves as a niche clothing manufacturer, although we are producing some pretty kick %^&^* T’s :)
